Lotus Sol

I am a non-binary, self-taught painter, curator and art director, working across mediums to create environments where dialogue, community-building and expression happen, designed for the energy that enters a space or steps in front of a painting to exist in its entirety. In art direction, within the growing community warmly known as MAMELANI, I collaborate with creatives across mediums to create space for showing art, connecting and creating multi-disciplinarily. The spaces are created to allow for conversation about social issues, the culture that finds us, the experiences that bring us together, help us grow and create, that emphasise the importance of creative expression and immersive collaboration and its integral connection to community and liberation.

My painting practice focuses on drawing connections between the physical and emotional world. Through realism and surrealism, I create visuals of what I've experienced, envision and am inspired by. My paintings exist as spaces, interchangeably encompassing two primary themes: the resilience and teachings of flora and fauna and its connection to emotional process and liberation, and my narrative of the world, represented by cultural references from music and fashion that impacts me and the community within those spaces.

Pushing culture forward through my practices matters to me because art can never die, artistry has been part of the architecture of the future for eons, within every period, artists need spaces for expression to thrive, to share their stories and visions for the future with the community that finds them and for the community to engage with and celebrate that artistry. It is imperative that culture is shared, platformed and engaged within a time where there's a shift happening, not just within the artistic movement, but the economic, political and cultural changes as well.
