I am Mandisa Mary-Jane Mtembu, a musician known as Mary Jane, and an international and national award- winning Creative Director. My creative discipline lives at the intersection of sound, storytelling, and visual
language. Whether I am writing/singing music or shaping narratives for film and branded content, my work
is rooted in emotional authentic truth and intentional expression.
As a musician, Mary Jane, I use sound as a form of storytelling. My music explores self identity, vulnerability,
love, and resilience, drawing from lived experience and the lives of others. Music, for me, is not just
performance but it is a space for honesty and connection, where people can see themselves reflected and
feel less alone.
As a Creative Director, my focus is on building meaningful visual worlds. I am particularly drawn to stories
that challenge the mind and what we know, amplify underrepresented voices, and question the systems
that shape how we see ourselves and others.
I believe storytelling is a way of shaping history and documenting it as the same time, which is why
embracing culture is important because we are continuing to write history. This matters to me so much
because representation shapes reality. Growing up, I rarely saw nuanced, truthful portrayals of people who
looked like me or lived like me. My work is a response to that absence. By creating with intention, I aim to
contribute to a culture that is more honest, more inclusive, and more emotionally brave. One story, One
sound, and One image at a time.
