Filmmaker and community organiser/curator

I am a filmmaker and community organiser/curator. Born in Durban, rooted in Cape Town for a decade, but now based in Johannesburg, my lived perspective has been influenced by the varying urban cultures of our major cities. My practice focuses on developing and platforming the stories of youth and women. My studies in Psychology and Film form the basis of my practice, exploring social issues through a creative visual lens. I believe that it is necessary to share authentic African perspectives that reflect our circumstances on a global scale, and have had the privilege of screening short films I have produced to audiences from San Francisco to Tokyo.

Our screens, now more than ever, have an indisputable influence over our day-to-day. Pushing culture forward, to me, relies on genuine connections that use the screen as a mechanism of uniting, not isolating. My practice as a South African creative can't exist in a vacuum while youth unemployment and gendered violence are urgent and ongoing crises. Overcoming these issues requires diverse community engagement and sincere connections. The Emotional Club, the community project I've founded, advocates for unapologetic emotionality and empathy as an invaluable strength to visual storytelling. The word ‘emotional’, which has long been used as a weapon to justify hindering the progress of women in male-dominated fields. We encourage the influence vulnerability has on the perspectives of women and LGBTQ+ filmmakers. The Emotional Club foregrounds underrepresented voices, using writing and creative practice not only as self-expression but as a form of cultural participation and intervention. Pushing culture forward to me involves helping to shape a cultural and creative landscape that is people-centred and empathetic.
